Ecco una definizione di Fado, pubblicata dall’UNESCO: Fado is a genre of performance that combines music and poetry, widely practiced by different communities in Lisbon. It represents a multicultural Portuguese synthesis of Afro-Brazilian sung dances, local traditional genres of song and dance, musical traditions from the rural areas of the country, carried by successive waves of internal migration, and the cosmopolitan urban musical models of the early nineteenth century. Fado pieces are usually performed by a solo singer, man or woman, traditionally accompanied by an acoustic guitar with metal strings and the Portuguese guitarra, a pear-shaped zither with twelve metal strings, typical of Portugal, which also boasts a vast solo repertoire.
